Rafi die Erste

I was born in Porto where I got my diploma in Classical Ballet by the Royal Academy of Dance and a M.A in Architecture. I was firstly introduced to the Graffiti scene in 2003, in Lisbon, through friends linked to the vanguard of the Hip Hop movement in Portugal. It was also at this time that I took my first steps as an architect. In 2006, together with two colleagues, I received 1st prize in the “Sache_ A Baixa do Porto” Architecture Competition, for the rehabilitation of a building in the historical center of Porto. In 2007 I wrote a Master’s thesis where I studied Alienation in the contemporary city and the phenomenon of Graffiti as a subproduct of it. In December 2011 I opened Dedicated Store Porto, the first store in the city dedicated to Graffiti & Street Art, a project I maintained for 11 years. During this time I orgnized International gatherings and several cultural events to promote Street Art & Graffiti culture. In 2015 I was invited to join Stick Up Girlz, the first International and Female Graffiti crew. In 2021, invited by the European Union Delegation in Cape Verde, I created a project with the purpose of Promoting Rights and active participation of young women from the Safende neighborhood, in the city of Praia. Since then, I collaborate in several Humanitarian Projects within the scope of Gender Equality and Empowerment. I use Art to create happy memories as tools for building Identity and Self-Value, as I believe it is a powerful instrument when it comes to human connections, sharing and community involvement. In 2023 I was awarded with the Medal of Merit of the City of Porto, by the Municipality. At present, in parallel with humanitarian projects, it is through painting murals and canvases, illustration and writing graphic novels that I express my Identity. I tell stories through visual poems that represent Order in Chaos, blending several aesthetics that reflect my individual expression and the way I see the world. I believe the collective harmony is determined by the whole and its individual parts. Transversely, my work reveals meaning in Memory, in a continuous self-representati on that transforms pain into purpose, ‘wall to wall’. I try to live on my own terms, wishing that my persistence, can inspire others to do the same with their lives.
